Ravi Shankar Kommireddi - Hotel Management to Facility Management

Hotel Management to Facility Management - A Three Decade Journey

Ravi Shankar Kommireddi

Ravi Shankar Kommireddi, that’s me as I wish to be called with the title Mr. Madcat’92.

I am now a well-versed, an acclimatized facilities professional nearing three decades exposure in Strategic and Operational Excellence in Facilities Management, Corporate Real Estate and Workplace Services across Manufacturing, Pharma & IT&ES sectors.

It all started with a newspaper advertisement in Vizag edition way back in 1989 inviting candidates to pursue ‘Diploma in Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition’ which sounded like pillars of Management, Technology & Food Nutrition as triple PhD itself.

For me as a student from +2 in science background and not having the courage to crack EAMCET, a competitive test for engineering and medicine, this advertisement was blessing in disguise to venture into open world with just that word ‘Management’ that mattered at those budding age of ours.

As it is for all Madcats, time just flew away from our basis induction in both college as well in home away from home hostels to graduating with a title to add - Mr Madcat’92. I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Management Trainee through campus hire by Sterling Resorts Ooty. This was a brief period and then a small stint in Taj Group and by then I was convinced that working for Hospitality zone is not my stream of things.

It was then my journey into General Administration started in a partial facilities scope - designated as ‘Catering in-charge’ managing as one point contact for Industrial Catering, Hospitality, Guest House and Client Management in a major factory setup of ITC - ILTD which lasted from 1993 to 1997.

Based on my five year stint in ITC, I was evaluated by senior leadership in an IT giant as Assistant Manager-Employee Club and F&B operations for one site. Throughout my 12-year tenure there I was managing large campuses, Development Centers, Training Centre, Residential (Dormitory), Guest House Management, Club & Recreational Zones, as part of job scope.

I have been a SPOC for visits by top delegates ranging from Chief Minister’s to Prime Ministers of visiting Nations and for Leadership Council Meets during my tenure as General Manager, which ended in 2010.

My third stint was in major India Pharma sector as Head - Campus Administration for a tenure close to 4 years and managing physical security, employee fleet transport and Chairman for Central Kitchen governance committee, Cafeteria, Pantry management, F & B and Event Management.

The scope of work included among others, ensuring quality food served to staff as per standard, preparing of the daily MIS for food order, ensuring proper hygiene level, finalization of weekly menu, quality check of the ready to serve food. I remember those days of menu planning in BTK /ATK’s which came handy during my industrial as well in IT sector catering and cafeteria management scope.

Apart from handling Real Estate operations including space strategy, owing to my background of certification in Hospitality domain, I have a thorough insight to Hospitality domain, Client Experience & F&B program across my organization in which I am presently working, till date. The journey continues.

While I wish to take pride while mentioning on the excellence sphere across these three decades in world of Facilities, it was the foundation of Hotel Management and the key learnings from our IHM budding days. This is in no way different from running Hotel Operations attributed to my scope in General Administration, managing Facilities, Hospitality Services and Operations.

The knack of dealing with Internal Customers, Client and Vendor Management is similar to managing hospitality zones and is also one of the key take away from our curriculum in college.

My mantra is ‘3P Concept’: People-Processes-Productivity which I strongly advocate as the DNA to Customer Centric approach along with strong passion in professional disciplines and streamlining SOP’s for enhanced operational effectiveness.
